There are all sorts of myths revolving around Autism (ASD). Many people end up seeing Autism as a disease, but there is scientific information that rejects this idea. Dr. Cuffman explains this, stating, “Autism isn’t an illness at all. It’s just the way your brain works” (Cleveland Clinic 5). Cuffman further develops this by relating ASD to a neurodevelopmental disorder. A neurodevelopmental disorder is what Dr. Cuffman describes as “Brain development and function that is different from that of a ‘typical’ child” (Cleveland Clinic 5). Another common misconception about ASD is that it’s a mental illness. This is one of the more understandable misconceptions, but it is very important to note that ASD is not a mental illness. Although Healthcare professionals use the same techniques for mental disorders, the key difference is that mental disorders are normally developed throughout life, and ASD is a condition you just so happened to be born with. Dr. Cuffman further points out that “Mental illnesses have really clear medical treatments available. But there’s no medicine that can treat autism” (Cleveland Clinic 11).
